1. Can first-year students have their cars on campus?
Yes, many first-year students bring their cars to campus. Permits are required and can be obtained from the University Police. All first-year students must park across the bridge at the facility services lot. From the facility services lot, you can walk back to campus (seven minutes) or take the University shuttle.
2. What other transportation is available if I don't bring my car?
There is a ride board in the Hartman Union Building. The university maintains a shuttle service around campus and into the town of Plymouth, during ski season local ski areas run shuttles directly to the slopes, Concord Trailways offers transportation north and south of the college, and Greater Laconia Transit Agency offers a service to Laconia, NH. The nearest airport is in Manchester, N.H.
3. How soon will I get my admission decision?
Plymouth State has rolling admission. It will be approximately four to six weeks from the time of your completed application until you receive a decision.
4. What are the deadlines for applications (and supporting documents)?
Spring deadline is December 1
Fall deadline is April 1
5. What are the freshman admission standards?
High school curriculum and grades are the most important admission factors. Most admitted students present a gpa that ranges from 2.5 to 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) in a traditional college prep curriculum of math (3 years), science (3 years), social studies (3 years), English (4 years), and a foreign language (2 years). While there is no minimum cut-off, the test scores of most admitted students range from 900 to 1100 on the SAT (Critical Reading + Math) and 19 to 24 on the ACT (Composite score). Recommendation, essay, personal qualities, and activities are also important.
6. How big a University is Plymouth State?
Approximately 4,000 undergraduate students and over 2,000 full and part-time graduate students (our graduate programs are offered at various locations around the state as well as on campus).
7. What's the size of the town?
The town of Plymouth has a population of approximately 4,000 full-time residents. To learn more about the town of Plymouth try Plymouth Chamber of Commerce.
8. How many students live on campus?
About 60 percent of our students live on campus in one of our eight residence halls or 160 student apartments. Another 1,200 to 1,400 students live off campus in private apartments within walking distance of the University.
9. Do students have to live on campus?
Plymouth State University policy states that all students are required to live on campus if space is available. This policy is sometimes adjusted in order to best fit the needs of the community and campus. For the 2007-08 academic year, students who will be 20 by September 1, 2007 or have earned 30 or more credits by the end of Winterim 2007 are eligible to live off campus. Current first year students are expected to live on campus. Release requests for students in this group will not be considered until after May 7th, 2007.
10. What percentage of students are from out of state?
About 46 percent of our students are not New Hampshire residents.
11. How many students are around on the weekends?
Approximately 65 – 70 percent of our students stay on campus on a typical weekend.
12. What is there to do on the weekends?
In addition to working, homework and laundry, Plymouth students take advantage of the numerous student organizations, activities and events on campus organized through the Hartman Union. The campus is alive with cultural activities, as well. There are numerous concerts, lectures, art exhibitions, films, theatre performances and more. If you enjoy the outdoors, there’s plenty of hiking, camping, swimming, fishing, cycling, canoeing and kayaking in the summer, fall and spring. And in the winter, PSU is within 25 miles of six different ski resorts.
13. Does Plymouth State have any deals with local ski areas?
Absolutely!! Every year the Student Senate decides which ski area(s) will have a deal with the PSU student body.
14. What is the average class size?
Our average class size is around 16 students. The largest is around 60 and the smallest, four.
15. Does PSU offer support services?
Yes! Plymouth has many support services including a Math Activities Center, Writing Center, and PASS (Plymouth Academic Support Services) Office. For more information contact PASS at (603) 535-2270
16. Do you have early admission?
No, we have rolling admissions—so as soon as your first quarter or first trimester grades are ready, you can gather your other materials and complete your application. (See the deadlines for fall and spring, above.)
17. Is housing guaranteed all four years?
Housing is available all four years, as long as students meet deposit deadlines (first year) and are timely in their response to room draw notices. Usually students live in the residence halls for the first two years, then have the option to live in student apartments or off campus.
18. Are internships available?
Yes, indeed. Internships are a very important part of PSU’s learning-by-doing philosophy. Some are an integral part of a specific curriculum and others are elective, but always a possibility. Some are coordinated by departments; many are overseen by The Bagley Center.
19. Will I have an advisor?
Yes, all students have an advisor and are assigned as early as new student orientation.
20. What kind of sports are there?
Whether you’re a player or a spectator, Plymouth has sports for you. We offer eight men’s and nine women’s varsity sports, eight club sports and intramurals from golf to Ultimate Frisbee.
21. Is there a study abroad program at Plymouth State?
Yes. Many students at PSU take the opportunity to study all over the world. Please refer to the Bagley Center for more information and to answer questions about studying abroad.
22. Can students study abroad even in their freshman year?
Yes. Plymouth State offers students a unique experience to attend Limerick University in Ireland for the 1st semester of your freshman year. More information about this exciting program can be found on the Bagley Center web site.
