Environmental Science and Policy

Margaret “Peg” Rock Kenyon Memorial Fund *
This endowment honors the memory of Margaret “Peg” Rock Kenyon and, in her memory, funds scholarships for worthy non-traditional students pursuing careers in education, social work, environmental studies, journalism, or medicine. Candidates are older than their classmates and they are contributing to their own educational expenses through part-time or full-time employment. Selection is based on the applicant’s latent potential for achievement and maturity; recommendations of faculty, university or home community members, or peers; and financial need. Recipients shall have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0. Candidates are nominated by the PAT Scholarship Committee and other faculty. As part of the screening process, candidates are required to complete an application. Recipients are chosen by the PAT Scholarship Committee.

Marjorie “Marty” Stokes Environmental Science and Policy Scholarship *
The Marjorie “Marty” Stokes Environmental Science and Policy Scholarship to provide a scholarship award for an outstanding student at Plymouth State University who is seeking to develop an understanding of the science of environmental issues and the application of policy to social and cultural interests of industry and communities. The eligible recipient/s shall be a full time matriculated returning student who is a declared major in any program within the Department of Environmental Science and Policy. The award is made upon consideration of the applicant’s financial need and also academic achievement, environmental involvement, community and/or campus activities, honors, and employment background. The selection committee, comprised of faculty and staff from the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, shall determine the most appropriate application and selection process based on the stated criteria.

Environmental Biology

Geneva Smith Memorial Environmental Biology Scholarship

Geneva was a pilot who became the first woman to pass the federal examination to teach aeronautics. She taught that and other subjects at Plymouth State University for 42 years (from 1924-66).  Prior to 1958, under Harold Hyde, Geneva headed the Math and Science division of the University. Then in ’58, departments were created, and Geneva chaired the Math Department. At the June 1966 Faculty Meeting, she was accorded a standing ovation and was presented a silver bowl by President Hyde. At commencement in 1966, was named Professor Emeritus of Mathematics. Smith Hall, a women’s dormitory which housed 238 females and was named for Geneva, opened in 1968. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science by the University in absentia at the 1983 commencement, shortly before she died.

Annually funds are provided to the PSU Natural Science Department for awarding a Geneva Smith Environmental Biology Scholarship.The recipient is chosen by a committee. No application process is required.

Science, Biological Education

Hunter Baney Barton Memorial Scholarship Fund
The purpose of this endowed fund is to honor Hunter Baney Barton and to provide scholarships. A scholarship shall be awarded annually to a student who is majoring in Mathematics or Natural Science (alternating years) and who has satisfactorily completed the Junior year. It is the donor’s preference that the recipient be a female student. The student shall demonstrate financial need, and shall be selected by a faculty committee in the respective department.  Next awarding cycle for science is 2016-17, and 2018-19.

Isabel Murray Natural Science Education
This endowment provides funds to recognize and reward student achievement in science courses. It is intended that all students meeting the criteria receive equal shares of the available funds. Awards are determined based on the following criteria. The student must be a full-time undergraduate, formally enrolled in Biological Science with an option in Education or Physical Science Education; have taken at least 12 credits of natural science courses at PSU; have completed the sophomore or junior year; have a grade point average in the science courses required by the major of at least 3.0 at the completion of the year for which the award is given; be a continuing student who has met the criteria upon completion of the previous school year. Recipients are chosen by a committee and a decision is made before the end of June of each year. No application process is required.

* Students who would like to be considered for scholarships that identify financial need as a criteria will need to complete the Federal Financial Aid Application before the March 1 deadline. Academic and Non-Academic Departments offering scholarships collaborate with the Financial Aid Office, therefore, it is imperative that students comply with PSU policy. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for further assistance.
