Appreciated Securities, Stocks, and Bonds
Making a gift of appreciated securities, stocks, or bonds may provide you with significant tax advantages, and may be made as outright gifts or as a payment on a pledge. Typically, securities transferred to the University will be sold at the earliest opportunity, with the charitable gift considered to be completed on the date of delivery, which in turn determines the tax year in which the gift is deductible. Fair market value for publicly traded securities is the mean selling price on the date of delivery of the gift. Due to potential complexities, the University may accept gifts of closely held stock and life insurance policies on a case-by-case basis only.
We recommend that you consult with one of our Development Team members before a transactions are initiated. For general questions on securities, please contact Kit Otto at 1 (800) 772-2620.
