Lara Gruner ’12
BS in Interdisciplinary Studies
Lara Gruner ’12 lives by the advice she shares with new students: get involved and give back. Gruner excelled at Plymouth State—in the classroom, in the community, and in the pool. As an Interdisciplinary Studies major, she created an academic program that combined her passions—coaching, psychology, and physical education—while positioning her to achieve her dream of a career in applied sports psychology. A four-year member of the Women’s Varsity Swim Team, Gruner competed at the NCAA Championships and during the 2012 season finished in the Top 24 in each of her events.
Gruner’s service to the community has been a constant throughout her four years at Plymouth State. She’s volunteered with the Special Olympics, taught adapted swim lessons and senior water aerobics at a local recreation department, and served as a Plymouth State mentor, where she worked with middle school students in the local public school system. Gruner was recently invited to sit on the board of The Faith, Hope and Love Foundation, a non-profit organization created by PSU alumnae Laura Brusseau and Jessica Dutille.
“PSU has certainly given me the tools I need to succeed and make a difference in my community,” she reflects. “I realized that it’s what I do with those tools that can truly change the lives of the individuals I work with.” Gruner plans to attend graduate school where she will earn a master’s degree focused in recreational therapy.
