Change of Major to Art Major Portfolio Requirements

Students intending to change their Major/Option to Art need to undergo a portfolio review of their work before being approved for acceptance into the Art Major.  Students transferring to the Art Department from other departments at PSU are also required to submit a portfolio.  The portfolio is an important part of your application to Plymouth.

I.  Contents

The portfolio should consist of 10 items and should include work that clearly shows your skills, strengths and interests.  You can show work in a variety of media and techniques as well as show a group of works with a specific theme or focus.

Select 10 Works from any of the following Art courses that you have completed at PSU:

Creativity in the Visual World, Drawing I or Drawing Objects, Interiors and

Landscapes, Color and Design and/or Form in 3D

Latest work from most recent PSU Art courses at highest levels taken

Work directed towards option if Ceramics, Painting, Printmaking, Graphic

Design, Drawing or Sculpture

External work from other institutions or workshops, etc.

Personal work - limit to 2 selections

We recommend that your selections are representative of each Art course you have taken at PSU.

Evaluation criteria include skill with materials, skill with formal elements of Art and Design, ad conceptual problem-solving. Be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped mailer for the safe return of your portfolio.

II.  Format

Portfolios may be presented in one of two ways:

  1. Digital Portfolio:  You may choose to submit your portfolio in a digital format using PowerPoint software.  Save as slideshow onto CD.  If you are including 3D work, provide multiple views of the object (these will still be considered as one item).
  2. Physical Portfolio:  Please mount and/or matt all 2D works.  Works must be clean and neatly presented.  Submit using an appropriately sized portfolio.  If including 3D works, digital photographs may be presented.

III.  Statements

The portfolio must include a written statement, sent with the portfolio and not to exceed one page, outlining the PSU major or option you are applying to and what you see as your future career in the visual arts.

The portfolio must also include information on a separate page about each work including the media, size and date of completion.

IV.  Dates

Portfolios may be submitted to Portfolio Committee throughout the fall and spring semesters:  October through  December and February through  April.

V.  Location

Submit portfolios to Art Department Office, Draper Maynard Room 207.  The office will be open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Please contact Deb Stalnaker if you have any questions:  535-2933.

Note:  If you are not granted admission to the Art Department based on this initial portfolio review, you may continue to take  studio art classes.  You may then re-submit your portfolio during the next semester for  review.  Based on portfolio acceptance and  Art Department approval, you can then formally change your major to Art by submitting the Change of Major form available at the Registrar's Office.
