

About Professor Avilés
Dr. Lourdes B. Avilés received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, PR, and her Ph.D. in atmospheric sciences from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL. Her areas of expertise include tropical meteorology, air quality, atmospheric dynamics and earth science education.
Prior to joining the PSU faculty, she served as a graduate research and teaching assistant for the physics department of the University of Puerto Rico, as a lecturer in physical science and mathematics at Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, and as a graduate research and teaching assistant for the department of atmospheric sciences at the University of Illinois.
Dr. Avilés currently teaches both undergraduate courses for the B.S. in Meteorology and the general education program and graduate courses for the M.S. in Applied Meteorology. She is also involved in research in areas such as air quality in New Hampshire and other regions around the nation and hurricane development from African waves in the Atlantic Ocean.
