ANTHROPOLOGY and SOCIOLOGY  Goals

1.  Theoretical Paradigms in Anthropology and Sociology

a.        Learn about the origins of each discipline and the major contributors to each discipline.

b.        Explain the major perspective in each discipline

c.        Understand the four subfields in anthropology and major foci in sociology

d.        Use correctly the major theories, language and concepts of each discipline

e.        Describe the relationships of Anthropology and Sociology to other disciplines and fields of study 

2.   Mastery of the Subject Matter Areas of Anthropology and Sociology

  1. Demonstrate sociocultural and international awareness
  2. Understand the underlying concept of sociocultural relativism that guides the two disciplines
  3. Be aware of human diversity and the complexity of human problems
  4. Appreciate the influence of the environment on the individual
  5. Understand the processes that result in human cultural change over long periods of time
  6. Demonstrate the ability to analyze, evaluate and apply knowledge learned from these two disciplines
  7. Be conversant with current trends and changes in the world and in relationship with American society
  8. Be aware of social policy in private and public sectors and how that affects human behavior and trends in research

3.     Research Method

  1. Understand the purpose of research
  2. Explain the different varieties of research in both disciplines
  3. Utilize standard research methods to design basic studies
  4. Perform research by gathering, analyzing and reaching reasoned conclusions based on valid and reliable data
  5. Demonstrate how results/data are linked to theory and/or body of knowledge within the discipline
  6. Demonstrate the benefits and uses of research results

4.     Ethics in doing Anthropology and Sociology

a.       Demonstrate knowledge of the ethical codes of both the American Anthropology Association and the American Sociological Association; also specific codes of ethics of the Society of Anthropology

  1. Demonstrate that individual research is guided by these ethical standards

5.     Information, Competence, Technology and Computers

  1. Demonstrate the ability to distinguish scholarly and non-scholarly works
  2. Demonstrate how scholarly knowledge can be obtained through a variety of ways inside as well as outside the classroom
  3. Demonstrate competence in obtaining scholarly knowledge using multimedia technology and/or computer

6.     Critical and Creative Thinking, Reasoning and Problem-Solving

  1. Engage in creative and insightful thinking
  2. Be effective in using critical thinking
  3. Approach problem-solving openly and develop reasoning skills to create, defend and criticize debates and arguments

7.     Communication Skills

  1. Write effectively in a variety of formats
  2. Demonstrate effective oral communication skills in various venues
  3. Develop and use effective interpersonal communication skills

8.     Applications of Anthropology and Sociology

  1. Discuss how theories and principles relate to everyday life
  2. Develop and discuss appropriate solutions to contemporary issues and problems
  3. Provide areas in which anthropological and sociological knowledge are used in the fields of work, or
  4. Provide the individual with opportunities to use anthropological and sociological knowledge in internships and field schools

9.     Career Planning and Development

a.       Demonstrate preparedness for an entry level professional position of interest to each student
