B. S. in Music Education

Program Goals

The B.S. in Music Education prepares students to teach and supervise vocal, instrumental, and general music from Kindergarten through Grade 12. 

 Student Learning Outcomes 

Theory 

The student will demonstrate competency pertaining to 1) music reading; 2) ear training; 3) improvisation; 4) fundamental music vocabulary; 5) harmony, including part-writing and composition; 6) form and analysis; 7) instrumental and vocal arranging. 

History and Literature 

The student will demonstrate an understanding of the historical development of musical expression and the roles that music plays in contemporary and past cultures. 

Performance

The student will develop and demonstrate musical performance skills consistent with standards required for a successful career as a music educator. 

Techniques 

The student will demonstrate appropriate performance competency in voice, string instruments, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and piano and/or guitar. 

Conducting 

The student will demonstrate competency in rehearsing and conducting choral and/or instrumental music with adequate knowledge of requisite skills for public school performing ensembles. 

Methods and Materials 

The student will demonstrate a knowledge of the philosophical foundations of school music education as well as the ability to deal effectively with program administration, assessment, and curriculum development. 

Practicum 

The student will participate in supervised class observations and student teaching experiences at the elementary and secondary levels and will demonstrate teaching and administrative skills appropriate to a new professional in the field of music education.
