Assessment Advisory Group

Minutes – November 1, 2002

Present:  J. Bernier, I. Cucina, L. Daily, W. Fogleman, J. Krueckeberg, J. Maata, N. Mathis, B. McCahan, Z. Shen, A. Staples.

This meeting started at 8:05 a.m.

  1. Approval of the Oct. 18 minutes had to be deferred until it is presented to the Group.
  2. a. Barbara reported that the University Planning Committee sent the proposed Mission Statement to the Executive Council. Although the Council is generally happy with the document, they do suggest moving the history and the description down, and the mission part up.

Barbara also reported the CPC is still in the stage of delegating various parts of the Strategic Plan to the relevant committees for more input and feedback. She did observe that such feedback sometimes comes from bottom up. For example, it is the College Advancement Department that came up with the related goal.

            b. The Group then discussed the proposed Mission Statement:

  • Barbara went through the document and explained it along the way.

  • The Group felt that there are several parts in this document, such as history, mission and vision, and sometimes, they are mixed and blurred.

  • The Group also discussed what should the nature of a Mission Statement. Some of us suggested that it could be based on philosophy and values, then further indicate the mechanism of accomplishing them.

  • Some also expressed doubts about the assessibility of such terms as “appreciation”, “awareness”, “understanding”, etc..

  • The group thus made a recommendation to the CPC to make a more focused statement.

            c. The Group also discussed the proposed Student Survey Form. We understand that this will be incorporated as part of the WebReg process. We agreed that this is a “good” form. We also made a few specific suggestions:

  • The question no.10 should be brought to the front.
  • The word “rectify” in question no.5 should be replaced with something more understandable, such as “clarify”.
  • A question might be added in to reflect the advisor’s effort in teaching the students to plan for themselves.
  • A question about the readability and usability of the catalog as a planning tool could be added.

Also, some of us expressed an interest in seeing the answer to such questions as no.10 in a trend.

  1. Next meeting will be held in the Library Tower Room on Wed. Nov. 15 at 8 a.m.. The last meeting for this semester will be held on Wed. Dec. 4 in HUB, probably in Rm.119.

This meeting ended at 8:49 a.m..
