Assessment Advisory Group

Minutes – September 27, 2002

Present:  J. Bernier, T. Boggess, L. Daily, W. Fogleman, V. Garlitz, T. Keefe, J. Krueckeberg, J. Kulig, J. Maata, N. Mathis, B. McCahan, Z. Shen, A. Staples.

1)      Wavell Fogleman elected chair.  Julie Bernier presided over the first meeting as convener.

2)      Wavell Fogleman volunteered to serve as scribe for this meeting.  Scribe position will rotate.

3)      Julie Bernier distributed the report of the Assessment Task Force to the President (April 1, 2000).  She also distributed copies of the book A Practioner’s Handbook for Institutional Effectiveness and Student Outcomes Assessment Implementation, Nichols, JO, Agathon Press, 1995.   There are five copies of this book.  Group members are asked to peruse the book and pass it on to another member.

4)      Fogleman and Kulig reviewed the work of the Assessment Task Force and in particular what the suggested role of an Assessment Committee was perceived to be.  Briefly, those roles were

  • Work with the CPC to determine what institutional goals would be assessed in a given year.
  • Assist in figuring out what method(s) would be used for such assessment.
  • Work with campus in deciding how assessment would be integrated into other campus activities.
  • Assist departments and divisions, when asked, by giving guidance to their drawing up of assessment plans.
  • Assuring that data was collected from across campus so that reports could be prepared for accrediting agencies.
  • Disseminating reports to campus groups on the results of assessment efforts.

5)      Composition of the group was discussed.  It was felt to be a good idea to get two students to serve if possible.  Tim Keefe suggested looking for a student who was in a curriculum where assessment was being learned.  Barbara McCahan suggested having a graduate student who might be a PSU alum.  Fogleman will contact the Student Senate for recruits.

6)      Julie Bernier reviewed briefly what departments have been asked to do this year toward assessment planning.

7)      In discussing group goals for the year, Julie Bernier wondered how we could get an update on assessment activities going on campus since the last inventory done by the Assessment Task Force.  She will send a request to department chairs and division heads and query the Institutional Research Office.  Barbara McCahan was asked what the CPC does to decide what institutional goals are assessed each year.  She indicated that a great many reports are received each year but so far there hasn’t been a schedule of assessing particular goals.

8)      The group agreed that it will meet on the first and third Friday mornings of each month at 8am.  The next meeting will be October 4 in a place to be announced.
