To asses the extent to which these goals are
being met, the Department of English will establish a plan which
examines
l.
The extent to which these goals are being addressed in courses
required for the Literature Option.
--Annual review of
syllabi to ensure they clearly state goals and objectives which
support the overall mission of the Literature Option as well as
elaborate specific strategies and/or assignments through which these
goals will be met.
--Periodic review of
curriculum and scheduling to ensure that course offerings reflect a
breadth and depth commensurate with the Literature Option’s goals and
objectives.
2.
Indirect measures—student reports of their progress toward meeting
these goals.
--Course evaluations
shall include questions which direct students to reflect on the goals
of the course and if those goals were achieved.
--Exit questionnaires
with selected graduating seniors and/or alumni will ask students to
reflect on their experience with the Option.
3.
Direct measures—representative portfolios of literature students in
which they collect essays, examinations, and journal/informal writing
activities will be reviewed by literature faculty.
--Portfolio
Assessment Procedure—Literature faculty will collect portfolios of
work from seniors. The faculty will ask
--Does the portfolio
demonstrate effective and successful use of documented literary
research?
--Does the portfolio
demonstrate in-depth study of writers and topics?
--Does the portfolio
demonstrate creative thought or practice?
RESULTS
At the end of each year, the literature faculty
will review the portfolios of material from seniors and discuss the
quality of work and the degree to which it achieves the stated goals
of the option.
ACTION PLAN
The action plan will directly reflect the results
of the assignment and will suggest needed changes to the program.
