History Goals
History majors, in addition to
the outcomes expected of any student exposed to the general education
program, can:
1.
Explain: theories of history,
historical schools of thought, and the development of “historical”
questions.
2.
Distinguish between primary and
secondary sources, as well as evaluate the veracity of historical
arguments based upon the sources used.
3.
Evaluate the veracity of historical
arguments based upon the methodology employed.
4.
Conduct research using the skills
employed by historians.
5.
Transform research efforts into
historical projects.
6.
Communicate research efforts and
conclusions via presentations: written, oral, or other.
7.
Describe broadly the unique histories
of:
- the United
States,
- Europe, and
- at-least one
other geographically-distinct area of the globe.
8.
Describe broadly the interconnected
histories of at least three geographically distinct/unique places on
the globe.
9.
Describe in detail, the unique
histories of:
- several periods
of United States history;
- several periods
of European history; and
- several periods
of two non-Western countries’ respective histories
10.
Produce an historical argument, based
upon independent research, that is coherent, cogent, grammatically
correct, and suitable for presentation to an audience of professional
historians.
11.
Describe career opportunities for those with
the historians’ skills.
12.
Describe the requirements for attaining an
advanced degree in history.
