Dean Bowers welcomed the group and discussed its assignment, particularly in light of the NEASC accreditation requirements. He emphasized the desirability of taskforce members attending the NEASC workshop on March 12. W. Fogleman summarized his previous assessment work and, as convener, led a discussion of the tasks outlined in President Wharton=s memorandum of Jan. 15, 1999, to wit: 1. inventory current PSC assessment activities 2. investigate best practices in assessment 3. review model college-wide assessment programs at institutions comparable to PSC 4. solicit PSC faculty and staff input in identifying PSC-specific learning outcomes [to be subject of assessment] 5. develop and recommend an administrative structure for operations of the assessment program. President Wharton arrived and thanked the group for its willingness to take on this work. He stressed the need for multiple modes of assessment as opposed to a single instrument. W. Fogleman was elected to chair the taskforce. He told the group he would foresee trying to accomplish items 1-3 above this semester. A presentation at the May faculty meeting would report on our findings and begin item 4 above. In fall >99, the group would continue to seek faculty/staff input with the goal of presenting tentative recommendation toward item 5 to the faculty at the December >99 faculty meeting. A final report to the faculty and President Wharton would be scheduled for the beginning of April 2000. The next meeting is scheduled for March 10 at 11:15 am in the Room 119 of the HUB. |
