Emergency Procedures
Catastrophic Injuries
This is defined as any condition in which a student athlete’s life is
threatened or the student athlete risks permanent impairment. Examples
include, but are not limited to, respiratory or cardiac arrest, spine
injuries and possible fractures.
Emergency Procedures
One athletic training student should send for (or radio if there are no
other athletic training students) a certified athletic trainer (ATC). The
athletic training student should stabilize the head and neck, calm the
athlete, and do a primary survey. If needed, initiate life-saving
techniques. The athletic training student informs the ATC of the
mechanism, history, and any other pertinent information. The ATC conducts
an evaluation and makes any necessary decisions. If EMS is needed, call
9-1-1 on the nearest telephone. Campus Police may also be called on the
radio to activate EMS. Send a athletic training student, coach, student,
or bystander. Whoever is sent must have the following information:
Name, address, telephone number of caller
Number of athletes injured
Condition of athlete(s)
First aid initiated by first responder
Specific directions to emergency scene
9-1-1 caller must HANG UP LAST and then go to direct the EMS team to the
scene. Contact John Clark or Peter Cofran at 535-2750 to let them know
that EMS has been called. Send someone with the athlete’s emergency card to ride with the
injured student athlete to the ER. Do not leave practice or event
unattended. Send another student, manager, or coach with the injured
athlete.
Type up an injury report, be as specific as possible.
If a Certified Athletic Trainer is Unavailable
One athletic training student stabilizes the head and neck and calms the
student athlete. The other does the primary survey and evaluation. Make
every attempt to contact an ATC. If EMS is needed, Campus Police may be
called on the radio, or have another athletic training student, student,
coach, manager, or bystander call 9-1-1. Be sure to have the following
information:
Name, address, telephone number of caller
Number of athletes injured
Condition of Athlete(s)
First aid initiated by first responder
Specific directions to emergency scene
Remember to hang up last, then go to direct EMS to the scene.
Send someone with the injured student athlete in the ambulance with the
athlete’s emergency card. Don’t leave the event or practice unattended. Send
a coach or another student if necessary. Type up injury report as soon as
possible with as much detail as possible.
Closest Telephone
There may be a need to call for an ambulance, so every athletic training
student, student-athlete and coach must know where the closest telephone is
to their practice and game sites. Remember if there is a portable radio
available, call Campus Police or the certified athletic trainer on duty to
have that person call for an ambulance.

the ambulance uses the River Street entrance and enters the fields at
the far end of the PE Center. Someone should meet EMS and direct them to the
appropriate location. Fields in front of PE Center (field hockey, women’s

needs to meet EMS to direct them to the scene. Softball fields should
have the ambulance use the entrance under the D & M sign on Holderness rd.
Meet EMS to direct to proper location. Tennis courts and athletic
training room, the ambulance enters through the back entrance of the PE
Center. For the athletic training room, EMS enters through the second
door. Tennis courts will have the ambulance drive up to the courts. Meet
EMS to direct to proper location. Gymnasium and swimming pool
emergencies have the EMS enter through the south ramp entrance. Send
someone to meet EMS to direct to proper location. Field house,
wrestling, dance, and racquetball will have EMS enter through ramp
entrance on the West side of the PE Center, by the tennis courts. PSU
Campus Police will arrive to open the necessary gates for EMS. They are
aware of these procedures for EMS. If EMS arrives first, they also have a
key to the gate in each ambulance. An ambulance is on location for
all home varsity football games only. Otherwise, if an ambulance is
needed, radio to Campus Police or to the ATC on duty to call for an
ambulance.
Health Services/ Infirmary
Use this facility for non-emergencies, when an athlete is ill, or when
referring any other student (recreation, intramural or club sport
individual) to a physician. To see a physician, an appointment must be made.
A nurse is on duty Monday through Friday when classes are in session for the
fall and spring semester only. The facility is closed on the weekends and
during winterim and the summer. The extension is X2350 or 536-3370.
Visiting Teams at Plymouth State University
Inform visiting athletic trainer/ coach of our procedures for that game
site. If a visiting team requires EMS during a contest, make sure someone
goes with the student athlete and that someone is covering the event. Follow
the procedures previously outlined for CATASTROPHIC INJURIES. Inform a
certified athletic trainer as soon as possible, if they are not already
aware of the situation.
