Opportunities for Meteorology Students

Meteorology studentsThe PSU meteorology program lets you broaden your learning experience in many ways. You can

  • Work individually with a faculty member on a research project of your choice.
  • Receive on-the-job training in operational meteorology through an internship with the National Weather Service forecast offices, television stations, the Mt. Washington Observatory or private meteorological firms.
  • Prepare and broadcast your own weather forecasts for the local community access television channel, the campus radio station WPCR, or the Plymouth State weatherphone. Plymouth State has a modern video studio for the television forecasts with "blue" screen and computer technology.
  • Compete nationally for summer research positions at the National Meteorological Center, the NASA Goddard Laboratory for the Atmospheres, the Air Force Phillips Laboratory, the Oklahoma Research Experience for Undergraduates Program, and other locations—PSU students have been very successful in being selected for all of these programs.
  • Perform paid summer and part-time academic semester research working on aspects of a combined air chemistry, climate and weather technology program involving Plymouth State, the University of New Hampshire, the Mt. Washington Observatory and various National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) laboratories.
  • Work on special projects for organizations outside of the academic community, like the Northeast Utilities wind power assessment project, NHDOT Road Weather Information Systems
  • Present scientific papers at regional and national meteorological conferences.
  • Attend regularly scheduled current weather map discussions presented by both faculty and students.
  • Explore the Internet—all students (even first-year students) are provided nearly unlimited access on the Internet from many locations (e.g. academic buildings, dorms, etc.), including wireless Internet access in Boyd Science Center.
  • Help design Web pages and resources for the meteorology program.
  • Work under work study or student hourly programs in the Plymouth State Weather Center and New England Weather Technology Evaluation Center Lab.
