Applied Research Experience

The Center focuses on applied field research in collaboration with local agencies, environmental organizations, and other colleges and universities. Additionally, the curriculum includes an intensive summer program of week-long courses at the Humboldt Field Research Institute in Steuben Maine. Our students have the opportunity to solve real world problems, gaining the skills, experience, and contacts. Examples of research projects include:
  • the impacts of acid rain on New Hampshire lakes,
  • effectiveness of the Clean Air Act in reducing pollution,
  • watershed hydrology,
  • distribution of mercury in the environment,
  • controlling milfoil,
  • reducing phosphorus loading to rivers and lakes,
  • field and analytical methods for environmental monitoring,
  • land use planning techniques to improve environmental quality,
  • effective stewardship education.
