Environmental Research Laboratory

Mission

Environmental Research LaboratiryThe mission of the Environmental Research Laboratory is two-fold:

  1. To support applied environmental research by PSU students and faculty, and
  2. To serve our local and regional partners, such as volunteer associations, the NH Department of Environmental Services, and the US Environmental Protection Agency, by offering local environmental analysis services.

Services

The Center for the Environment’s Environmental Research Laboratory provides freshwater analysis services to university research programs and to state, federal and local environmental monitoring programs including the NH Department of Environmental Services’ (NHDES) Volunteer Lake Assessment Program.

The laboratory follows EPA and/or NHDES approved analytical protocols on all analyses including:

  • Closed cell pH and air-equilibrated pH
  • Acid neutralizing capacity (ANC)
  • Conductivity, turbidity, and apparent color
  • Total phosphorus
  • E. coli
  • Chlorophyll-a
  • Cations and anions, including phosphate, fluoride, chloride, bromide, nitrate, nitrite, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfate, and ammonium

Equipment

Environmental Research Laboratory

The Boyd Science Center has a suite of high precision analytical instruments including:

  • Dionex ICS-2000 Ion Chromatography system for simultaneous determination of anions and cations.
  • Radiometer Analytical TIM860 Titration Manager for automated ANC and air-equilibrated pH analyses.
  • Lachat Instruments QuikChem® QC8500 Flow Injection Analyzer with in-line digestion module for automated analysis of total phosphorus.
  • Varian 240Z Graphite Furnace and SpectAA 55 Flame AA for metals analysis at both ppm and ppb scales.
