Nominees for 2013 faculty elections are invited to use this space to post statements concerning their nominations for faculty committees or other elected positions. This is purely voluntary and is intended primarily as a means for newer faculty to introduce themselves to the wider faculty prior to the election (although any faculty nominee should feel free to post a statement). This space is not intended as a Q & A forum.

On the first line, please post your name, department, and the committee or position for which you are running. Follow that with your brief statement. If you are having issues please contact Christian via email and he can help with getting your statement listed.

Candidate Statements

Mark Turski, Environmental Science and Policy Department, Academic Technology and Online Education Committee Candidate

I have been involved with educational technology since I arrived at PSC in 1991. I have served in a wide variety of technology roles at PSC/PSU.

First Technology and Teaching Fellow in 2001 and responsible for coordinating academics, administration and ITS in developing a model for technology moderated instruction and learning for the faculty and students.

Chaired The Instructional Technology Coordinating Council (ITCC).

Director of Plymouth State College’s Earth System Science Education Alliance (ESSEA) grant that provides online earth systems science courses for teachers. This course was one of the first fully online courses offered at PSU and available for a worldwide audience.

Director of Plymouth State University’s Preparing the Earth System Scientists of Tomorrow (PESST) Project funded by NSF’s and the Earth System Science Education Alliance’s (ESSEA) GEO-TEACH grant that provides online earth systems science courses for in-service teachers.

I have presented at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and the Geological Society of America’s (GSA) national conferences on a variety of topics related to online education at both the graduate and undergraduate level. I currently serve on NSTA’s standing committee for The Journal of College Science Teaching and the Board of Directors of the NH Science Teachers Association and advocated for moving to electronic media for both journals.

I am an advocate of faculty led initiatives and professional development funding for faculty who want to remain on the cutting edge of technology use in the classroom. I feel that this PD funding should be separate from PD funding that is designated for your content specialty.

After serving in multiple administrative roles at PSU and working with state and national organizations I realize the problems and opportunities that technology represents in education. It is my belief that we need to work to overcome the fiscal issues that surround technology in order to better prepare faculty to use the tools available in the most efficacious ways.

While I’m very current on teaching technologies, computer systems and programs/apps available on Mac and Windows platforms I don’t use a telephone if I can avoid it. Hate ‘em!

Nominees for 2012 faculty elections are invited to use this space to post statements concerning their nominations for faculty committees or other elected positions.

Cheers!

Candidate Statements

Christine Rine, Social Work Department, Frost School Council Candidate
Since Fall 2009, I have been a faculty member in the Social Work Department. In that time, I have represented my department in various service initiatives such as the Homeless Access Survey and the GIS/ DCYF Foster Care Project both in conjunction with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. It is my hope to take the same active role in service among Faculty Governance by serving on the Frost School Council. I am committed to the importance of ensuring access to Higher Education with particular interest in the development of on- line options to meet the needs of our diverse student body.

I would be proud to represent the interests of our active, supportive, and diverse faculty to ensure the integrity of our curriculum as a member of this committee.

K. Hridaya Hall, Counselor Education and School Psychology Department, Frost School Council Candidate
I am a third year faculty member in the Counselor Education and School Psychology Department. My department targets people who work full-time and other adult learners and I am attentive to their unique needs in course delivery. I was one of last year’s delegates to the USNH Academic Technology Institute and have attended a series of trainings on educational uses of technology. I have a scholarship interest in technology and pedagogy and will be presenting in this year’s Spotlight on Faculty Using Technology. My combined interest and experience in adult learning and technology would make me an asset to the Frost Council.

Phil Lonergan, Art Department, Athletic Council Candidate
I am a professor in the Art Department and the Head of the Sculpture Program here at PSU. I have served on many committees during my 12 years here, including the Honors Council, Grievance Resolution Committee, and the old Executive Council and First-Year Council. I was also recently the faculty rep to the Board of Trustees. I am interested in serving on Athletic Council because I miss being involved with college-level athletics. I played college hockey in Minnesota, and have coached soccer for my daughter’s elementary school team. I have also coached for White Mountain Youth Hockey. I believe that athletics can be a positive complement to students’ intellectual and holistic development, and I would enjoy working on issues related to the intersection between university academic programs and sports.
