About Professor Hart
Kylo-Patrick Hart serves as chair of the Department of Communication and Media Studies and regularly teaches courses in film and television studies, video production, and popular culture. He is the author or editor of several books about media, including The AIDS Movie: Representing a Pandemic in Film and Television; Film and Sexual Politics; Film and Television Stardom; and Mediated Deviance and Social Otherness: Interrogating Influential Representations.
Professor Hart was honored by being named the first-ever recipient of the Plymouth State University Award for Distinguished Scholarship. He values the opportunity to complete original research projects and remains quite active in this regard. His numerous research essays pertaining to film and television topics have appeared in various academic journals (including Journal of Film and Video, The Journal of Men's Studies, Popular Culture Review, and Quarterly Review of Film and Video) and media anthologies (including Bang Bang, Shoot Shoot: Essays on Guns and Popular Culture; Common Sense: Intelligence as Presented on Popular Television; Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Text-Reader; Men and Masculinities: Critical Concepts in Sociology; and Television: Critical Concepts in Media and Cultural Studies).
To date, Dr. Hart has earned three graduate/professional certificates (in film studies, copy editing, and book/magazine publishing), four master's degrees (in communications management, liberal studies, print journalism, and radio-television-film communication), and his Ph.D. (in mass communication, with an emphasis in film and video studies) from major research institutions including Dartmouth College, the University of Michigan, and the University of Southern California. An accomplished photographer and videographer, he also worked for more than a decade as a journalist, primarily in magazine publishing and entertainment reporting, in major media markets including New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
