BA Degree in Art/Graphic Design Option

Graphic Design Program Mission Statement

The intent and focus of the Graphic Design Program at PSU is to graduate students who are able to demonstrate expertise as visual communicators. We provide a solid visual/educational experience by developing the students’ capacity for critical thinking toward problem-solving, stimulating their sense of creativity and imagination, and preparing them as pre-professionals ready for a wide variety of entry-level jobs in the field of Graphic Design. To accomplish this goal, the PSU program introduces students to a progressive series of courses that are tiered in complexity, from introductory level typography and layout skills to more advanced corporate design applications. Each academic year progresses through a series of projects which will integrate students into the conceptual and practical aspects of the design process, challenge their ability to learn and create in a progressive digital environment, encourage their understanding of important communication and presentation skills, and accumulate work toward the assembly of final portfolios and promotional materials in preparation for the job market. We serve a wide range of students by offering both the BA and BFA degrees, as well as a Graphic Design Minor for students interested in combining interdisciplinary studies toward specific job goals. The PSU Graphic Design Program offers professional practice through internships and takes pride in the many and diverse positions our graduates have secured within local, regional and top national firms.

Graphic design is one of the fastest growing professions, and studying graphic design at Plymouth State University could very well be the turning point in your artistic career, because PSU offers one of the most comprehensive graphic design programs in the Northeast area. Both the B.F.A. and the B.A. degrees offer design options. There is also a graphic design minor.

PSU offers a unique state-of-the-art facility contained in a renovated factory building, with full student accessibility to our 20-workstation Apple I-Mac computer lab and state of the art Smart Board for enhanced instruction. All students selected for inclusion in the graphic design program will work with dedicated design instructors in a hands-on curriculum that balances conceptual thinking with technical know how, and unites traditional design skills with digital applications.

Past PSU graphic design program graduates have secured positions in design studios, ad agencies, corporate in-house design departments, digital multimedia facilities, printing companies and other professional situations.
