BFA Degree in Art/2D Studio Art Option

2D Program Mission Statement

The 2D program is committed to providing a positive environment in which a broad range of artistic viewpoints can flourish. We believe in building a solid foundation of perceptual, technical and theoretical knowledge in order for students to be prepared to successfully pursue their direction of choice. Combining a sound foundation with experimentation and risk-taking is vital for the skilled artist of the future. Exposure to a variety of traditional and contemporary approaches to art making is necessary for students to make informed choices when developing individual visual ideas and directions. The faculty prides itself on nurturing diversity, independent thinking and assisting students in their search for a personal artistic vision.

Drawing skills are essential to success in any studio area, therefore all art majors take Drawing I: Object, Drawing II: Object/Landscape, and Drawing III: Figure. Advanced drawing courses are available for the Drawing and Studio Art Options and as a minor.

The need to use drawing as a tool for conceiving and then working through an idea becomes self-evident as students progress through the art curriculum. PSU’s program is dedicated to helping students use drawing as a means for developing ideas, in addition to completing more formally created pieces.

Students are offered new insights as artists as they develop their drawing methods and media skills. They are challenged to become highly interactive participants in the drawing process wherein perception, analysis, interpretation and communication are integrated with the acquisition of drawing skills and techniques in preparation for life as a mature artist.
