The gallery talk for the BFA Seniors in the studio program will take place tomorrow (Tuesday, May 7^th) from 4:00 – 6:00 in the Karl Drerup Gallery. From 4:00 – 4:30 only students are invited to have a discussion with the seniors. From 4:30 – 6:00 we will have the full gallery talk with everyone invited. Please attend and support these students.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Graphic Design Exhibition

Each year the BFA program in graphic design displays the thesis project of its seniors: a comprehensive commercial identity. Created and installed by future professionals in graphic design, the exhibit showcases their innovation and creativity with posters, ads, layouts, logos, stationery, packaging design, and more.

Bachelor of Fine Arts Studio Exhibition

The BFA degree in studio art is for students interested in careers as practicing artists. During the senior thesis year, students develop a body of work through which they explore a personal range of themes, individual style, techniques, or processes. A committee of art faculty guides each student’s artistic progress, which culminates in the selection of work featured in the annual year-end exhibition.

Visiting Artist – Soo Sunny Park

Born in Seoul, Korea, Soo Sunny Park moved to the U.S. at the age of eleven and grew up in Marietta, GA and Orlando, FL. Park received her B.F.A. in painting and sculpture from Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio and a M.F.A. in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. After a residency at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME (2000), she worked in St. Louis, Missouri as an installation artist and as a Lecturer at the Washington University, School of Art. In 2001, Park was selected as the River Front Times “Best of 2001, Sculptor of St. Louis”. She is a recipient of a Joan Mitchell M.F.A. Grant, The 19th Annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition Grand Prize, The Helen Foster Barnett Prize from The National Academy Museum, New York, NY (2008), and The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center Fellowship (2010). Park lives in Hanover, New Hampshire and teaches at Dartmouth College.

Students honor Berlin’s past through art

The Berlin Mural Project was a collaboration between three entities: the Art Department and the Center for Rural Partnership’s at Plymouth State University and the Tri-County Community Action Program, Inc., which originated the project. The task was to create a series of twenty four, 4’ X 8’ murals (768 square feet), which were to cover the windows in the west wing of the Brown Paper Company’s historic Research and Development Building in Berlin, NH to prevent further deterioration.

Twelve students from PSU’s Art Department, supervised by Professor Tom Driscoll, created the mural in a single semester during the spring of 2011. The group began by presenting three different designs for the mural to Jim Wagner, the main impetus behind the project and liaison between Berlin and PSU. Once he chose the final design, the rest of the semester was spent enlarging and honing the initial drawings to fit on the sheets of plywood, painting the actual mural and sealing it against the elements.

The mural depicts aspects of the culture and history of Berlin, and consequently of the paper industry, since the growth of the two was closely tied together. The panels also focus on the Research and Development building, where many scientific innovations originated. The creation and painting of the mural was a great collaborative effort on the part of the twelve artists, who had to rely on each other on a daily basis in order to accomplish this enormous task. Seeing the mural finished and installed on the R&D building was a moment of great satisfaction, both for the artists and the citizens of Berlin.
