Thank you cards from a ‘Chemists Celebrate Earth Day’ visit with local third graders. Aparna Waghe, Marguerite Crowell, and undergraduates Pat Gile (chemistry education) and Jake Vallimont (chemistry) looked at natural pigments of plants, the effect of acid rain on plant growth and development, and other activities with the students in April.
On March 21, Jeremiah Duncan gave an invited presentation entitled “Nanoscale silver: Current knowledge and data gaps in the environmental, health, and safety data” in the Nanotechnology and the Environment: Emphasis on Green Nanotechnology session at the American Chemical Society Fall 2010 National Meeting in San Francisco.
On February 10, Jeremiah Duncan served as an invited member of a panel to discuss the use of pesticides in lawn care. National Chemistry Week was celebrated at the local middle school! Anil Waghe, Marguerite Crowell, Kim Duncan, and four undergraduates led hands-on activities with Mr. Helgerson’s sixth graders. We welcome Jeremiah Duncan and Kimberly Duncan to our department! Jeremiah is our new Assistant Professor of Chemistry, and his wife is our new Research Assistant Professor of Chemistry and for the Center for the Environment. They come to us from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
