The chemistry education option is a new program which is designed to provide certification for secondary school chemistry teaching (provisional NH state certification). Students in this program take the same curriculum as all chemistry majors for the first two years. In addition, during these first two years, students considering the education option work with their academic advisor to choose appropriate enrichment opportunities designed to expose them to various teaching/learning options. For example, students can tutor in the chemistry student center, act as a teaching assistant in the labs, participate in outreach visits to local schools, and attend science teaching meetings such as NHSTA and NSTA.
Note that although these opportunities are available to all chemistry majors, students considering the education option would likely focus on those prospects that would help to strengthen their portfolio or make a commitment to the option. In the third year, students begin taking the education courses that lead to certification. Finally, students will do their student teaching in the final semester of their senior year.
