Biotechnology

After graduating with a degree in Biotechnology in 2006, I went on to pursue an MBA with a concentration in investment and finance.  My reason for pursuing an MBA is so I can combine my knowledge of Biotech with my knowledge of investment and finance with the thought of working as a financial analyst for a biotech company.  I am confident that when I graduate with my MBA in 2008, I will find a job that will allow me to combine my two areas of study.

“Plymouth State University is a small college with Biotech as a very new major where only a few students are involved in it. I think having this major instead of biology, chemistry or anything….just helped me to be more marketable in the job world.  I definitely feel like whatever I learned as a biotech major at PSU is really helpful right now at my job that I do as a Clinical Research Assistant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital because of having that exposure in biology, chemistry and technology.”

I work for SAFC Hitech, Sigma-Aldrich’s company that produces specialty chemicals for the semiconductor industry.  My position is a Quality Control Chemist.  I run ICP-OES, NMR, Karl Fisher titration, make Certificates of Analysis, and have various other duties.

The department is a fun place.  It’s nice that its smaller because you pretty much get a one on one with the professor when you need help and it becomes more personal.  Everyone in the faculty is approachable and really nice, and if the professor isn’t around, there are usually TA’s hanging around the building somewhere.

These past four years as a Chemistry major at Plymouth State University has been a great experience. When applying to schools my senior year in high school, I stayed away from large student bodies because I wasn’t the type of student to speak up in a large crowd. I came here to find small classroom settings which were exactly what I wanted. The professors knew me by name and there was always a friendly greeting with a smile when they passed by. When I felt like I was falling apart, my professors were always willing to bend over backwards to help. One professor in particular, gave students his home phone number and said we could call him whenever we wanted!
