“The Challenges & Promise of Special Education Positions”

Dr. Ann Berry presented at the annual conference of the American Council of Rural Special Education on March 6, 2013 in Orland, FL. Dr. Berry presented results from her national study with 203 rural special education teachers to a group of special education teachers, general education teachers, rural special education administrators and university faculty. Her presentation, entitled “The Challenges and Promise of Special Education Positions in Rural Areas: Listening to the Voices of the Teachers,” outlined factors related to teacher satisfaction and commitment and presented implications for rural administrators.

Dr. Berry’s manuscript was accepted for publication in the Rural Educator. Her manuscript discusses what special education teachers like best and find most challenging about their positions in rural schools. The teacher’s perceptions highlight many of the assets found in small, rural, communities: the sense of a close relationsip with coworkers, students and their parents.

"I have always had an interest in special education, and my experience in the childhood studies program at Plymouth State helped me realize that this is what I want to do. This program does an amazing job with preparing teachers for what they will be experiencing in the field. It is set up so that it is manageable for students and teaches them what being a special educator truly is. Kathleen Norris Nomination

Kathleen Norris was nominated by the State of New Hampshire Department of Education and selected by ETS to serve as a panel member for the multistate standard setting study for the revised Praxis I tests. She has been invited to participate in the International Doctoral Education Research Network. Kathleen also conducted evaluation research for an institution of higher education and a community collaborative. Both reports have been accepted.

Cheryl Baker & NHDOE

The NHDOE awarded $500,000 to PSU through a grant written by Cheryl Baker for the State Agency Higher Education award. The work will be performed through Baker’s group, the Rural School Educator Effectiveness Collaborative (RSEEC). This effort will provide quality professional development opportunities to NH’s rural educators. RSEEC partners include the NHDOE, Keene State College, North Country Education Services, Granite State College and the New England College. PSU’s Impact Center’s Director Natalya Vinogradova will be spearheading the mathematics professional development for this project.

Cheryl Baker in Shanghai

Cheryl Baker taught a face-to-face section of ED 5005 Social Psychology and Mythology Across Cultures to 33 international educators in Shanghai, China. This work is part of an agreement with Shanghai American School to provide graduate level professional development opportunities to the school’s faculty. While in Shanghai, Cheryl provided administrative support and conducted dozens of advising sessions with current and future PSU students.
