With a degree in French, you will achieve a competent command of the language while developing an in-depth familiarity of the culture, literature, film, history, art, and business practices of the French-speaking world.
Spoken on 5 continents by over 200 million people, French is the official language of 32 countries around the world. Here in New Hampshire, French is the second most commonly spoken language after English as French and French-Canadian heritage makes up the largest ancestry group in the state.
In Plymouth and throughout the region, you will easily find opportunities to speak French. Located just 100 miles from the Quebec border, Plymouth and its surrounding lakes and mountains welcome French-speaking Canadian visitors on a regular basis. As part of their classes, PSU French students use their skills to develop French language materials for local businesses and tourist attractions.
Learning French will position you for any number of jobs that require interfacing with the public such as in business, tourism, hospitality, healthcare, and law enforcement. The knowledge of French will set you apart from other candidates for jobs in any company that conducts business with Canada or Europe.
While at PSU, students are encouraged to study abroad. We have a direct exchange program with the Universite Lumiere Lyon 2 where you can study abroad in Lyon, France for the same price as PSU tuition and keep your financial aid package.
