Languages and Linguistics students are strongly encouraged to study abroad. A study abroad experience allows students to become immersed in a different culture while further developing language skills. Most language majors choose to study abroad during their junior year, after they have had a chance to develop and expand their language capabilities.
Our department has recently launched two direct exchange programs through which PSU students may study at the host institution while paying the same tuition they pay to attend PSU. This includes keeping their financial aid package. Our direct exchange programs are:
- Université Lumière Lyon 2, in Lyon France.
- Universidad Austral de Chile, in Valdivia, Chile
In addition, PSU Languages and Linguistics students have studied abroad on a number of different programs around the world including:
- Sevilla, Spain
- Alicante, Spain
- Costa Rica
- Université de Sainte Anne
- Puerto Rico
Staff at our Global Education Office can assist you in creating a study abroad program that meets your academic interests and needs.
Student Spotlight:
Student Valerie Schlegel has received the prestigious Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship Award of $4000 towards the cost of her semester abroad in Cordoba, Argentina in the Spring of 2013.

This is the first time a PSU student has been recognized by the Institute of International Education’s competitive scholarship program.
Valerie is a double major in Spanish Language and Literature and Political Science and serves as vice president of the World Language Society.
Her successful application stood out because of the detail put into describing her “Follow-On Service Project” and a new initiative called “Leveraging Languages” which will involve PSU students, alumni and study abroad students when she returns to campus next fall.
