Summer Dance Intensive – Hip Hop

Hip Hop with Decadancetheatre a.k.a DecaxPSU

Overview:
Join The Deca Crew for a 4 day summer intensive at Plymouth State University that will challenge you to be the best dancer you can be.  Fusing hip-hop dance technique classes with creative exercises designed to get your mind and body working in new ways, DECAxPSU is perfect for students of an intermediate to advanced level who want to explore news ways of creating hip-hop dance theatre.  With live music in class by Deca’s DJ Boo, each day promises to be fun, exciting and full of inspiration.

Where: Plymouth State University Silver Center and other campus locations.

When: Thursday – Sunday July 3 – 6, 2014

Who: Intermediate/advanced dancers ages 15 and up. Placement audition required.

Fee for Day student:

  • $400 includes lunch

Fee for Boarder Student:

  • $600 (double room, includes linens and meals)
  • $680 (single room, includes linens and meals)

Placement Audition Information

Due to the popularity of this intensive we are now requiring students to send a video demonstration for placement purposes.

Video clip should include:

    • Introduction of yourself (name, age, where you are from)
    • 2 minute solo in the genre of your choice (this can be a self choreographed solo, excerpt of larger piece, piece set on you)

Sample Schedule

9:00am – 10:00am  Group Warm Up

    • A high-energy hour to get our day going set to the music of DJ Boo, spinning live in the studio

10:00am – 12:00am   Hip Hop Choreography and Devised Work

    • Students will work in smaller groups focusing on concepts of hip-hop as concert dance.  We will explores ideas in musicality, character development, storytelling, improvisation.  Students will also have the opportunity to learn excerpts from DECA’s rep.

12:100pm – 1:30pm  Lunch

1:30pm – 2:30pm  Technique Class 1 (divided by level)

    • Students will learn different styles focusing on the fundamentals of hip-hop dance technique.  Classes will include breaking, popping, locking, house, and contemporary hip-hop

2:30pm – 2:45pm  Break

2:45pm – 3:45pm   Technique Class 2 (divided by level)

    • Students will learn different styles focusing on the fundamentals of hip-hop dance technique.  Classes will include breaking, popping, locking, house, and contemporary hip-hop

4:00pm – 4:30pm  Daily Recap/Cypher

    • All students and teachers will regroup for a “show and tell” of what was learned.  We will end the afternoon with a cypher so each student can incorporate  new skills into their freestyle.
Evening Activities:  DECAxPSU will have three evening activities including a “History of Hip Hop” lecture, a film screening and a “Block Party”

2012 “Outstanding Emerging Choreographer” New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) nominee, Decadancetheatre has been redefining the image of women in hip-hop since 2004.   Based in Brooklyn, Decadancetheatre has become a key ambassador of authentic, New York City hip-hop culture around the world through performances, workshops and creative commissions.  Led by artistic director Jennifer Weber, the company represents a global vision of hip-hop with an international roster of dancers from the US, France, Germany, Norway, Nigeria and Japan.   Challenging hip-hop’s male-dominated convention, Decadancetheatre takes female dancers out of the background of music videos and into the forefront of theatrical performance.

Decadancetheatre has toured across the US, UK and France including performing atJacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, B Supreme Festival of Women in Hip Hop at London’s Southbank Center, LEAP Festival in Liverpool, New York City Center, The Apollo Theater, San Francisco Hip-Hop Dance Festival, and Bumbershoot in Seattle where the company shared the bill with Wu-Tang Clan, John Legend, and Fergie.  DECA has been featured on Blue Peter (BBC), at half-time for the NBA’s Miami Heat and in The New Yorker, The New York Times, The Village Voice,Dance Magazine, Dance Spirit Magazine, Shoes -Up and XXL. Decadancetheatre’s  When the Sky Breaks 3D (2011)  won the “Overall Excellence in Choreography” award at the 2011 New York International Fringe Festival and went on to complete a 16 city UK Tour in the Fall of 2012.   In addition to theatre work, the company regularly creates and performs fashion events with L’Oreal brand, MATRIX.

The company will be performing at Jacob’s Pillow June 25-29 as part of Unreal Hip Hop Series.
