The Bridge of Decisions

Microfiction by Beth Abbott

---

She stands trembling on a rickety bridge above water and traffic.  Her mother and father are there.  A cop is there too.  There’s silence, except for the distant sounds of cars whizzing by from the right, and rapids on the left.

“Make your decision!” demands the cop.

The girl looks over at her parents for comfort.  But they’re like zombies.  No sign of concern.  Do they realize the decision she has to make?

“I don’t have all day!”

The bridge seems to be high in the sky.  There’s no end to it.  It’s just there.  The girl doesn’t know why it’s there.  She doesn’t know why she’s there.  This decision seems only obvious. Why is it so hard?

“Hurry up you little bitch!”

She slowly walks over to the side of the bridge where the highway is.  It looks like an uninviting blur of lights.  She leans over for a better view, but backs up nervously.  She walks over to the other side, where the water is.  She stays at this side for a while, watching the water, wishing she was at the shore.

“You’re taking too long!  Damn-it! Jump now!”

The cop is angry now. Her parents are crying.  She’s crying.  Taking a breath, she leaps off the bridge.  Her body slams into the frigid water.  She struggles as she swims to shore.  She finally reaches the wet sand, lies down, sighs and closes her eyes.  Suddenly, she wakes up.  It’s over.  It won’t happen again.

She’s safe now.
