Campus IT inventory project during June

ITS is pleased to announce the introduction of a complete technology asset management program that will create efficiencies in managing, tracking and identifying all computing and networking equipment for the entirety of their lifecycle.

Beginning in June ITS will be initiating a campus wide program to place identification tags on all existing PSU owned desktop and laptop computers as well as other IT assets as we enter these assets into the system. The new identification tags will be small circular tags (about the size of a quarter) with a 2D barcode that will allow us to track and maintain the record with scanning devices.  Andrew Garrozo, a 4-year student employee of ITS, will be conducting the inventory tagging process.  You may see him around campus, in the clusters, offices and network spaces throughout the month of June.

We estimate the initial phase of the inventory to take 4 weeks and the impact of the inventory will be minimal since we only need a few minutes with each machine.  We appreciate your understanding.  We hope that this data will allow IT to more efficiently manage warranty schedules, repairs and assist departments with purchase planning across campus.

Rising Energy Costs May Be Slowing Recovery.

In April, the Coos economy continued to show signs of slowing recovery. Although the Index advanced twelve straight months on a monthly year-over-year basis, its growth rate has slowed two consecutive months. Slowing growth was felt on individual sectors as well. The manufacturing sector, which had been one of the few brightest spots of the Coos Economy since the Great Recession, saw its growth rate edging down steadily since November on a monthly year-over-year basis. The rebounding hospitality sector, while doing better than prior year, appeared to have reached a plateau. Average Saturday traffic counts retreated two straight months on a monthly year-over-year basis, while the growth rate of the estimated rooms and meals revenue remained flat since October. High gas prices, along with an increasingly probable double dip in the real estate market, threatened the fledgling economic recovery.

The State economy fared better. All five component indicators remained up from a year earlier. Its growth rate had inched up steadily since August. The labor market continued to improve; the number of employed residents kept climbing up at a faster clip on a monthly year-over-year basis. However, there were some preliminary signs of slowing in the manufacturing and hospitality industry. Growth in industrial electricity sales appeared to have reached a plateau since last year on a monthly year-over-year basis. Similarly, growth in average Saturday traffic counts had steadily declined since last year on a monthly year-over-year basis. High energy costs may be taking a toll on the economy. The struggling housing sector, which appeared to head for deeper troubles, is another reason for concern.

The real estate market analysis can be found at the end of this report.

End of Year Update

Colleagues,

I had planned to send you an end-of-the-year legislative update earlier in the week, but held off in order to give you a more complete picture when it appeared that the Senate Finance Committee would complete its recommendation to the full Senate this week.

As you know, state appropriation is approximately 13% of our budget. The Governor recommended a 5% reduction, to 95% of our appropriation. The House voted a reduction to 55%. Yesterday the Senate Finance Committee also recommended 55% with some additional amendments. That recommendation will go to the full Senate for discussion next week, and then the House and Senate must agree in Committee of Conference, after a new set of budget projections.  The process will continue for some weeks, likely until the end of June.

We have a way for you to follow some of the materials about legislative and budget updates in these upcoming weeks even if you are not on campus. A special section on plymouth.edu, 2011 PSU Budget and Legislative Update, contains a timeline of the legislative budget process, a chronicle of the key communication with our legislators, a general overview of the Plymouth State budget, the impact of the legislative proposals, and more.

The communication between USNH and the legislature is ongoing. Over 40 businesses and individuals around the state paid for a full-page ad urging support for USNH that appeared across the state, and we are grateful for their commitment. I hope you’ll take a look at the ad and think to thank our community and business partners.

Despite all of these issues, we have had a joyous end-of-the-year filled with events to make us proud, with student presentations, honors, and awards. The commencements were wonderful. Special thanks are due to those who helped with the ceremonies and put the rain plan into effect so successfully on Saturday morning.

As we draw to the end of this academic year, I want to thank each of you on our students’ behalf for all that you do to help PSU students succeed. It is an honor to work with you.

Sincerely,
Sara Jayne Steen
President

“Let’s Go Fishing” Event Celebrates Weeks Act Centennial and National Get Outdoors Day

Learn how to fish or develop your fishing skills at a fun free event on Saturday, June 18, at Wildcat Mountain Resort (Route 16, Pinkham Notch). The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., rain or shine; registration closes at 12 noon, so get there early! “Let’s Go Fishing” volunteer instructors and staff from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department will be joined by representatives from the U.S. Forest Service and the Appalachian Mountain Club to provide a wealth of experience and knowledge to help the beginning angler get started. The special “Let’s Go Fishing” Event at Wildcat Mountain Celebrates the Weeks Act Centennial and National Get Outdoors Day.

Participants who register on the morning of the event will receive a “passport” outlining 5 stations that must be completed before they can begin fishing. Educational and instructional skill stations will include: Knot Tying; Fish ID; Casting; Ecology; Macro Invertebrates; and Fishing. Each station activity will take 15-20 minutes to complete and once an activity has been completed, the passport will be stamped and the aspiring angler will be one step closer to casting a line in the stocked fishing pond! No fishing license is needed to participate in “Let’s Go Fishing” activities such as this event.

All ages are welcome at this free event, but children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All participants should bring sturdy footwear and clothing as well as personal sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and bug repellent. The fishing pond at Wildcat Mountain is accessible via the “C lot” entrance located approximately a quarter mile past the main entrance on the north-bound side of Route 16 heading toward Gorham, N.H.

Co-sponsored by the White Mountain Interpretative Association, the “Let’s Go Fishing” Event at Wildcat Mountain is part of a coordinated statewide celebration of the Weeks Act Centennial and honoring the tradition of conservation and partnerships exemplified by the act, which created our Eastern National Forests, including the White Mountain National Forest. This observance of the Weeks Act provides an opportunity to promote increased awareness of sustainable forestry, land stewardship and citizen-based conservation. This event is also included among the National Get Outdoors Day events in June, which encourage Americans, especially our youth, to seek out healthy, active outdoor lives and embrace our parks, forests, refuges and other public lands and waters.
