Gisela Estes, of the Language and Linguistics Department, started the film series in the early 1980's. Back then, German-language films were shown to small groups of her students and friends in the college's Lamson Library.
When Horst Freyhofer (Social Science) and Peter Drexel (Computer Science & Technology) joined Gisela in the late 80's, the scope of the series expanded. The film selection still had a strong German-language thread. However, the list of films shown then included many from other parts of the world, including the United States.
With Gisela and Horst's retirement from the university, two new faculty members joined the group. They were Whitney Howarth and Filiz Otucu - both members of PSU's Social Science Department. Whitney and Filiz helped to keep the series going after Gisela and Horst's retirement.
This year, Rodney Ekstrom (Hartman Union), Justin L'Italien (PACE) and Peter Drexel have been instrumental in obtaining financial support for the series and for helping to promote it at PSU and in the Plymouth area.
The International Film Series receives financial support from Academic Affairs, PACE and the Hartman Union.
