The master’s programs in Counselor Education help students develop the skills necessary to become licensed mental health counselors and certified school counselors and school psychologists. Working closely with faculty members who are respected professionals throughout New Hampshire and across the country, you’ll pursue academic excellence as you work toward your degree. Plymouth State’s Counselor Education programs in Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling are one of few programs in New England that are accredited by the prestigious Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
The curriculum for a Master of Education in Counselor Education consists of seven core classes and an internship which provides a capstone experience. Choose one of four concentrations to determine the rest of your coursework:
In addition to the Master of Education degree, the Counselor Education department offers Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies (CAGS) programs in the concentrations listed above. Also, several certificate options exist that can be completed independently, as a non-degree program, or in conjunction with the Self-Designed MEd or CAGS programs:
- Conflict in Families
- Eating Disorders Institute
- Parenting Education
- Play Therapy
- Organizational Approaches to Transformation and Healing (OATH)
- Personal Approaches to Transformation and Healing (PATH)
Most courses for the Counselor Education programs are held in Plymouth, although some are periodically offered in Concord. Evening and weekend class times, week-long institutes, and online classes allow you to take courses while maintaining your job and home life.
With rolling admission, you may start your program during any term and can take up to 12 master’s-level credits or three CAGS-level credits before being admitted to Plymouth State. Please note that additional admission requirements exist for the Counselor Education and School Psychology programs: As a prospective student, you must participate in a group interview before a formal admission decision is made. Financial aid is available to qualified students.
