PSU Achieves Prestigious Counseling Certification
Plymouth State University Only N.H. School to Offer CACREP

Council for Accreditaion of Counceling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) PLYMOUTH, N.H. – PSU now offers some of the finest school counselor training available in New England after a rigorous approval process from a nationally-renowned organization. The Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) has accredited Plymouth State University's College of Graduate Studies to offer a M.Ed. in Counselor Education, School Counseling and Mental Health Counseling concentrations.

Under the direction of Dr. Virginia Barry and Dr. Dennise Maslakowski, PSU's College of Graduate Studies began working toward the CACREP certification several years ago. The certification process included hundreds of hours of work in preparing the self-study documents and detailing compliance with the CACREP standards. Those standards include:

  • Institutional support including library, faculty support, technical and financial support
  • Program objectives and the curriculum
  • Clinical instruction
  • Faculty expertise and staffing levels
  • Program evaluation and improvement documentation

The CACREP board approved PSU as an accredited program in January, after reviewing program documents and an on-campus inspection.

"The real winners are the consumers in the state of New Hampshire who will have access to better prepared school counselors and mental health counselors," said Gary Goodnough, professor for the College of Graduate Studies. "This is the first and only CACREP accredited programs in the state of N.H., which puts our students at the top of the field in the state."

As part of the CACREP accreditation, PSU will be able to form a national honor society, Chi Sigma Iota, for graduate students achieving excellence in the counseling curriculum.
