Doctor of Arts in Leadership

Plymouth State University entered into an articulation agreement with Franklin Pierce University in the spring of 2006 to offer a doctoral program for CAGS candidates interested in doctoral studies. This collaborative venture combines Plymouth State CAGS core courses (18 credits) with Franklin Pierce offerings. Candidates who decide to continue their education can pursue a Doctor of Arts in Leadership.

The philosophy of the Doctor of Arts degree at Franklin Pierce is grounded in the powerful dynamic created when transformational leadership practice consciously guides the discovery, dissemination and application of knowledge. The Doctor of Arts fosters an atmosphere of intellectual challenge, applied research, and creative scholarship in the context of the arts and humanities. The program engages future leaders in a transformative process of learning to pre¬pare them to facilitate social, professional, organizational, economic, and community development. Candidates will embrace the arts and humanities as a form of understanding and communication across socio-cultural boundaries.


Goals of the Program

  • To prepare leaders for transformational roles in society
  • To advance knowledge and applied research, preparing leaders with vision
  • To develop practice-focused scholarship, integration of knowledge, and reflective and service-based inquiry
  • To enhance the leadership values, skills, and knowledge of current and aspiring leaders in professional disciplines
  • To inspire the holistic view of leadership as a transformational process
  • To engage the process of analyzing and synthesizing content through a transformational leadership perspective
  • To foster an understanding of the importance of the arts and humanities in assuming the role of steward of the societal landscape, developing a sense of connectedness and community

Course Format

During the academic year, courses will be offered on Friday evenings and Saturdays. Weekend face-to-face meetings will be held approximately once per month during the term. Coursework will also be completed through an online component. Students may participate in internships/externships during the summer term. Special topics courses taught during the summer will be offered on a variable time schedule. Courses will be held at Franklin Pierce locations in Concord, Portsmouth and Lebanon. Students will matriculate as part of a cohort group at one of the three Franklin Pierce locations.

Leadership Core - 27 credits

  • Social Critiques
  • Transforming Communities through Applied Research
  • Transformation through the Arts
  • Doctoral Seminar: Research Methods, Data Collection and Analysis
  • Leadership and the Creative Imagination

Transformational leadership core courses may be transferred to Franklin Pierce University from the Plymouth State CAGS program. They may also be taken within the program through Franklin Pierce University. Students will present a portfolio of this leadership core and complete a written comprehensive exam before engaging in content courses.

Dissertation Foundational Content - 15 credits

Five (5) electives in content areas foundational to the dissertation in disciplines such as arts and humanities, business and law, sciences and administration, and education to include courses such as the following:

  • Managing Financial and Human Resources
  • Law, Ethics and Decision-Making
  • Policy Analysis and Organizational Change
  • Mastering and Guiding the Process of Change
  • Scenario Planning and Game Theory
  • Program Assessment and Evaluation
  • Cross Cultural Communications for a New World
  • Arts and Learning
  • Leadership through Writing
  • Transformational Leadership

Internship/Externship - 6 credits

Dissertation - 12 credits


Additional Information

Applications are available through the Franklin Pierce University Web site. The admission process includes a formal application, submission of official undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and a required interview. The transfer of CAGS credits from fully accredited partner institutions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Estimated time to degree completion is three to four years. The final year focuses on completing dissertation work. Please contact the Franklin Pierce University Graduate Studies office for individual course times and dates.
