Mary Ann McGarry teaches courses in environmental science and policy and science education at the graduate level at Plymouth State University and advises students on thesis projects. She also offers environmental service learning travel study courses which have taken place in Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, and she has traveled to Italy, Russia, and Chile to investigate sustainable education initiatives on behalf of PSU. Since 2005, McGarry has served as the lead science faculty member for the Pakistani Educational Leadership Institute (PELI)- a month long program offered on the PSU campus every summer. She has traveled to India (2010) and Pakistan (2011) for reciprocal PELI conferences. New Hampshire social studies and science educators have enrolled in a week long International Watersheds course as part of the PELI program.
McGarry helped direct a 5-year National Science Foundation (NSF) project entitled Maine Math Science Teaching Excellence Collaborative and served as advisor to another NSF multi-year initiative, the Bioregional Outdoor Education Project,located in the Four Corners area of the United States; McGarry remains active with this program, offering a March “Geo-cultural” travel study course to the region. McGarry served as director of education for the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation from 2007-2009, while remaining a PSU faculty member. In 2010 she co-led a NH Math Science Partnership focused on learning progressions and inquiry approaches in earth science for five school districts. McGarry publishes with graduate students. For three summers, 2008-2010, she has led the science communication strand of the NSF funded Research Experience for Undergraduates at PSU. Classroom science teachers are encouraged to apply for an equivalent NSF “research experience for teachers”. McGarry served as founding director of education for Maine Lakes Conservancy Institute, founded Maine Project Water Education for Teachers (WET), and served as the state coordinator for that program for 10 years before moving to NH, where she won regional and national awards for team developed projects.
