He is a natural resource/environmental sociologist, a field that studies community in its largest sense by examining the interrelationships between society, culture and the environment. His professional interests and areas of expertise on environmental topics include land management, rural community change and development (particularly in regards to natural resource dependence), community and grassroots activism, conservation, environmental communications and education, outdoor recreation issues and management, program evaluation, and public opinion about environmental and natural resource issues. Brian also teaches classes in social research methods and social statistics, and truly enjoys conducting research and publishing the results. He has worked on many different research projects and enjoys collaborating with students to facilitate the development of their professional skills. He loves to teach and tries to develop open and interactive classroom settings, and in addition tries to be very approachable to students because he enjoys talking and working with them. Brian has the benefit of having his personal passions and interests intersect with his professional activities, as he spends most of his free time outdoors. He enjoys backpacking, hiking, skiing, boating, and just about anything else that allows him to be in an outdoor environment. If you see him in that element he is most often enjoying that time with his wife, Audrey and his dog, Moose - be sure to stop and say hello! Degrees and Education
