Profile

Darin Padua is an assistant professor in the Exercise and Sport Science Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , where he serves as Program Director of the accredited undergraduate athletic training education program. Dr. Padua teaches several courses within the Department including, EXSS 75 (Human Anatomy), EXSS 85 (Biomechanics), EXSS 55 (Athletic Injury Evaluation), EXSS 69 (Athletic Training Seminar), and regular in-services for observers in the athletic training education program. He is also the Assistant Director of the Sports Medicine Research Laboratory.

Dr. Padua received his B.S. in Exercise and Nutritional Science with Emphasis in Athletic Training from San Diego State University (1996), his M.A. in Sports Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1998), and his Ph.D. in Sports Medicine from the University of Virginia (2001).

His primary research interests focuses on joint stability of the knee and shoulder. Specifically, he is interested in identifying risk factors and developing injury prevention interventions for ACL injury and shoulder pathology. Current research includes the evaluation of muscle recruitment strategies, joint kinematics, joint kinetics, and muscle stiffness properties as a function of gender and fatigue. Other ongoing projects involve the assessment of plyometric and balance based training protocols on biomechanical factors believed to influence ACL injury risk. He is Co-Investigator of an AOSSM Grant investigating risk factors for non-contact ACL injury in males and females.

Dr. Padua is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and the American College of Sports Medicine. He currently serves on the NATA Pronouncements Committee and the MAATA Convention Committee.

Since receiving his doctorate in 2001, he has given several invited presentations, published in sports medicine related journal such as the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, and the Journal of Athletic Training, and presented over 40 scientific abstracts at the annual meetings of the National Athletic Trainers' Association, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
