Profile

George Tuthill most recently served as Special Academic Affairs Assistant in PSU's College of Graduate Studies. Prior to coming to PSU, he was a member of the faculty of Montana State University, where he taught physics and conducted research in statistical mechanics for over 30 years. From 2004 to 2006 he served as Associate Dean of MSU's College of Letters and Science and, for 2006 to 2007, as Interim Dean of the College. He earned a PhD in theoretical physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976.

Degrees and Education

  • PhD, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • BA, Williams College

Research Interests

  • Theoretical and computational studies of statistical mechanical systems, with emphasis on phase transitions and cooperative phenomena.
  • Close collaboration with experimentalists working on ferroelectric, piezoelectric, magnetic, polymer, and liquid crystalline systems.
  • Development of new opportunities for K-12 teachers of science to engage in content-focused professional development. Served as Principal Investigator for the National Teachers Enhancement Network, a program of online teacher professional development courses.
