Profile

Richard W. Hunnewell received a B.A. in psychology from Colby College and a Ph.D. in art history from Boston University, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation on the art theory underlying the self portraits and depictions of the artist by the 17th century Dutch artist Gerrit Dou (an early pupil of Rembrandt). Since 1981, he has been the coordinator of the art history program at Plymouth State University, where he teaches a broad range of art history courses ranging from the Renaissance to the present, including Arts of the Far East. His research interests include portraiture, landscape, prints and popular culture, pedagogy and curriculum development. Twice he has been nominated for inclusion in Who's Who among America's Teachers, and in 1994 he received Plymouth State's Distinguished Teaching Award. Currently, he also serves as co-director of the Frost Faculty Center for Learning and Teaching Excellence, a grant funded initiative dedicated to investigating pedagogies of engagement relevant to today's students' lives.
