Profile

Robert J. O'Donnell teaches "Negotiating, Collaborating and Leading in Today's World for the Business Department. He is an Educator, a Trainer, a Mediator and an Attorney. In 1989, he established the Woodstock Institute for Negotiation in Woodstock, Vermont and serves as its Director and Senior Instructor. Before entering his consulting, teaching and mediation career full time, he practiced law for 22 years in his own law office in Woodstock, Vermont, specializing in environmental cases, litigation, divorces, real estate and business law.

Over the past 16 years, he has taught “Negotiation and Settlement Practice” at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University School of Law in Malibu, CA where he is a Visiting Straus Institute Professor. He will be teaching "Advanced Negotiations" there in May, 2007. He has also taught Negotiation at City University of Hong Kong (China); the University of Idaho College of Law in Moscow, ID; Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul, MN; and the Dept of Education and Social Services of the University of Vermont.

In addition, he has given training and workshops in Negotiation, Conflict Resolution, Collaboration, Mediation, Power, Management and Leadership Skills to over 9,800 people from businesses and government organizations across the country in 25 states as well as in Washington, D.C., St. Thomas, Canada, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Mauritania (West Africa), Cameroon (Central Africa), Burundi (Central Africa), Nicaragua, the former Soviet Union, and Hong Kong (China). Some of his representative clients include: Pitney Bowes, Inc., International Business Machines Company (IBM), the Bechtel Group, New Hampshire State Police, Vermont State Police, IDX, Incorporated, United States Postal Service, Northern Ireland Education and Library Boards, Coolemine Therapeutic Community (Dublin, Ireland), National Life Insurance of Vermont, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Dartmouth College, Harvard School of Public Health, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the U.S.! Army Corps of Engineers, and the Peace Corps in Mauritania and Cameroon. His joint training of union and management negotiators for master agreements has been very successful.

He also mediates high conflict disputes for the Woodstock Institute for Negotiation in environmental matters, community disputes, labor matters, business matters, business dissolutions, civil suits and divorces and is frequently called in to consult and negotiate a resolution for protracted union and management contract cases, sales of businesses, and legal suits.
