Profile

Shawn Maureen Powers was born and raised in Seattle, WA moving to the East coast in 1983 to attend New York University. While in New York she appeared off- and off-Broadway at CSC Rep, the Public Theatre, the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival and others while working with leading directors including Anne Bogart, Peter Sellars, Travis Preston, Carey Perloff, and Jim Simpson. She has worked on new scripts with playwrights John Guare, Mac Wellman, and Arthur Giron and has adapted several Donald Barthelme stories for the stage. Shawn helped to create downtown performance venues including the Obie-award winning HERE arts complex in the South Village. In New England, she has worked for Portland Stage Company, the Currier Museum of Art and Merrimack Repertory Theatre in Lowell, MA.

Shawn is presently the Director of Education at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, NH. At the Capitol Center she has developed nationally renowned arts education programs that were cited as "best practices" in the field by the Dana Press in their 2003 publication, "Acts of Achievement: The Role of Performing Arts Centers in Arts Education." She serves on the organization's programming team and is responsible for curating the Center's School Series in partnership with the Concord School District, in addition to Professional Development and Classroom Workshops. Shawn works directly with the Concord School District in developing their Literacy Arts curriculum, including co-facilitating the District's Literacy Arts Professional Development strand. She develops partnerships with educational institutions and school districts across the region and is an adjunct faculty member of Plymouth State University's Integrated Arts M.Ed. program and the NH Institute of Art. Shawn has served on the NH Arts in Education Advisory Board and Plymouth State University's Theatre Integrating Guidance and Educational Resources (TIGER) Advisory Board, was a founding Steering Committee member (Arts) for Greater Concord Leadership Teacher and recently worked on the NH Dance Teacher Certification Standards with the NH Department of Education. Shawn has also served on Peer Review Panels for the U.S. Department of Education and the NH State Council on the Arts.

Shawn received her B.F.A. in Acting from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and an M.A. in Arts Administration from Teachers College Columbia University where she studied Aesthetic Theory and Development under Maxine Greene and Judith Burton. Shawn completed her Certificate in Advanced Graduate Studies in Arts Leadership & Learning at Plymouth State University and presented her research paper, "The Art (and Science) of Programming: An Inquiry Into Creating a Season" at the Social Theory, Politics and the Arts conference at the University of Oregon in October 2005. Her article, "Synergy: Effecting Community Success" was published in the 2008 edition of the New Hampshire Journal of Education. Shawn is a doctoral candidate in Leadership at Franklin Pierce University.
