Graduate Assistantships, Fellowships, and Research Assistantships

Graduate assistants and fellows are an important part of PSU's collaborative learning community. They work alongside PSU faculty, staff, and students to help achieve the University's goals, gaining valuable experience as assistants, researchers, and teachers.

Graduate assistantships, fellowships, and research assistantships are available on a limited basis to highly qualified graduate students who have been fully accepted into a graduate program at PSU. All appointments are intended to benefit the appointee's own course of study or future goals, and the mission of the University.

Assistantship and fellowship awards may include a stipend and tuition waiver. The exact stipend amount and number of tuition waivers depend on the award type. Stipends awarded by the College of Graduate Studies range from $1,000 to $4,000 over the course of the position. Tuition waiver awards range from three to 18 credits over the course of the position. The tuition waivers must be used during the summer, fall, winter or spring graduate terms or semesters within the fiscal year the position is awarded. The fiscal year begins July 1 and ends June 30.

Research assistantships are generally grant-funded positions, available to students pursuing Master of Science degrees. Please consult the program coordinator to learn about research assistantship opportunities.

Full time assistants are expected to work an average of 12 hours per week and generally perform administrative or instructional work or research for a department or an individual faculty member. Full time fellows are expected to work an average of 15 hours per week and generally perform instructional duties for a department or individual professor. Finally, research assistants work with departments or individual professors on grant-funded research in the student's program of study.

Graduate assistants and fellows are required to maintain at least a half-time enrollment status and make satisfactory academic progress toward degree completion. Please see the graduate assistant and fellow handbook for details.

Applications for assistantships and fellowships should be returned to the College of Graduate Studies by April 15 for the upcoming year. Students admitted into the MEd in Advanced Athletic Training should review the program Web site for assistantship and application information, as the application and deadline are different than the general application.
