Designed to provide K-12 teachers with a repertoire of arts-infused, multi-disciplinary activities, the Arts in Education Summer Institute enhances the opportunities for the academic and social success of all learners. The content and structure of the week is patterned after the nationally recognized Integrated Instructional Model.

Integrated Instruction and Nature Explorations will be the focus of this summer's institute. How many ways can I teach a concept, skill, or understanding? How many ways can my students show me what they know, understand, and can do? Through hands-on workshops and discussions, participants will explore how the languages of visual art, drama, movement, music, and creative writing, can inspire students and open doors to understanding. Discover how the arts and outdoor learning activities can facilitate authentic assessments, creative and critical thinking, and the development of a caring community where each child develops a strong sense of place and stewardship for the earth. Participants will learn how to transform their students' beliefs of "I Can't" to "I Can". Final projects allow individuals or teams to create projects that will be immediately applicable to their learning environment.

Goals of the Institute

  • Establish stronger relationships between the arts and academic disciplines, standards, and district frameworks through a week-long series of Integrated Instructional Model Workshops exploring and modeling arts infusion, community building and inquiry-based teaching, and Differentiated Instruction.
  • Explore and practice skills and methods to develop a set of arts-infused tools for Differentiated Instruction ready to implement for grades K-12.
  • Experience multi-disciplinary, hands-on arts-infused workshops with professional artists and educators who work directly in classrooms using the Integrated Instructional Model, Arts Integration and Differentiated Instruction, and change beliefs of "I Can't" to "I Can" while setting goals one step at a time.

Integrated Instructional Model

Wendy Oellers, MEd, and Carol Young-Podmore, MEd, will co-direct the Institute and present an exemplary model of arts integration: the Integrated Instructional Model. The IIM is an art-rich Instructional Model designed to enhance teaching and learning with an emphasis on creativity, higher order thinking, critical life skills, authentic assessments, and the development of a caring community. The IIM is has received a quarter million dollar research award from the Federal Department of Education for the purposes of continued development, evaluation and dissemination. The IIM was nominated for the New Hampshire Governor's Arts Award for Arts Education and received a New Hampshire Best Promising Practice Award. Dr. Cynthia Vascak, chair, PSU Art Department; coordinator, MAT in Art Education; and co-designer, IIM, will be the guest speaker.

Our Mission

Every child has unique learning needs. We believe that learning in, with and through the arts every day, accompanied by the building of a democratic and caring class community, the use of inquiry based learning challenges and authentic assessments enhances the opportunities for the success of all learners. The IIM is designed to help teachers meet the diverse needs, capacities and interests of our learners by infusing and integrating curriculum with the arts, engaging children in critical thinking, and building community. We are committed to the enhancement of all children's joy of learning, success as learners and confidence as creative cultural agents.
