News & Events

Dear Colleagues,

The New Hampshire Impact Center at Plymouth State University has been working on a grant entitled "Making the Transition from High School to College" (MaTHSC).

This grant's primary goal is to help students bridge the current gaps between high school and college in the field of mathematics. The grant involves faculty and administrators from 15 different high schools in the State, faculty from the University of New Hampshire, Keene State College, the seven schools from the New Hampshire Community and Technical College System, and Plymouth State University.

The grant will be hosting a Forum on May 8, 2007 at the Grappone Center in Concord. We will be inviting every high school in the State to send a team of 2 - 4 members, the State Board of Education, School Boards from across the State, State Legislators, and faculty and administrators from every college in the State. At this Forum we will be sharing the information gathered by the various Committees: High School and College Survey Committee, National and State Research Committee, Curriculum Committee, NHCTCS Committee, and the Assessment/Testing Committee. We will be sending you more information about this Forum in the future.

Today we would like to share with you three documents that have been produced by the Curriculum Committee. This Committee's task was to review the Mathematics programs developed under federal funding and the some of the more popular mathematics programs in use in our NH high schools. The first document entitled "Curriculum Committee Report" (PDF 64Kb) gives the reader the background about each of the programs reviewed, information about the criteria used in rating the programs, and other pertinent information about the review process. The next document is an Excel file entitled "MaTHSC Program Rating Summary" (Excel 42Kb) and lists the programs and the ratings for each of the criteria. The final document entitled "Summary of Comments on Programs" (PDF 58Kb) lists comments made by each team of reviewers about the individual programs.

The findings of the Committee do not reflect the beliefs of any one member of the Committee, nor do they reflect the views of others involved in the MaTHSC Project, nor of any of the institutions involved in this project. The findings are meant to serve as a guide to help school districts as they review programs for courses to be offered within their districts. We hope you find them useful as you try to improve mathematics education in your schools, and we encourage you to use the criteria as you evaluate programs under consideration.
