Health Education Overview

Health EducationHealth education and promotion specialists are leading the nation's health improvement efforts. The Health Education program at Plymouth State University prepares students to work in a variety of educational, community and medical settings, including public and private schools, hospitals, managed care organizations, insurance companies, volunteer agencies and public and private work sites.

Ten content areas have been identified as the basis of health education:

  • Community health
  • Personal health
  • Family life
  • Growth and development
  • Nutrition
  • Disease and disorders
  • Safety and accident prevention
  • Environmental health
  • Consumer health
  • Substance use and abuse

Options are available in Wellness Management and School Health, with K-12 teacher certification. The Wellness Management option provides students with the opportunity to complete a 6-12 credit, 325-hour internship in locations throughout the country. The School Health option prepares graduates to teach health education in public school settings.
