Delegation
5 Phase Approach to Delegation:
- Preparation: Establishing the goals of the delegation; listing the tasks which need to be accomplished.
- Planning: Meeting with the staff; describing the tasks; deciding who will take responsibility for which tasks.
- Discussion: Reviewing objectives of the tasks as well as staff's plan for action; discussion potential obstacles and how to avoid them.
- Follow-Through: Monitoring the progress of each staff member on their assigned task; responding to unforeseen problems.
- Appreciation: Accepting the completed tasks and acknowledging staff's efforts.
- Well timed
- Communicated clearly
Keep In Mind:
- You need to be able to visualize and articulate your goals if you expect others to understand and succeed.
- Do not repeatedly assign someone a certain task just because they are good at it.
- Do not repeatedly assign tasks to the same people because they are responsible.
- Let people know how their tasks fit into the whole process and what the results will be for the entire project.
- Never revoke delegation - failing is a learning experience.
- Recognize staff members for their efforts or next time they may not be so successful.
