TIGER Educational Theatre Group Premieres Production on Sustainability

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Children in grades four through six at the Captain Samuel Douglass Academy in Brookline will get some lessons on sustainability October 16 when Plymouth State University's educational theatre troupe, <ahref="http://www.plymouth.edu/graduate/tiger/index.html">TIGER (Theatre Integrating Guidance, Education and Responsibility), premiere's their newest undertaking, Green TIGERRRR!

TIGER productions use children's own words, achieved through classroom writing prompt exercises, to create topical productions that help students solve social problems. The ensemble now has six shows in its repertoire.

TIGER is a collaboration between the graduate programs in integrated arts and counselor education at Plymouth State University. It was designed to create a forum in which different social issues can be explored. A new topic is chosen every two years.

Green TIGERRRRR! arose from collaboration between the troupe and the Captain Samuel Douglass Academy in Brookline. The anonymous writings of the school's students were used to create a fast-paced musical theatre performance to teach the children practical, positive environmental actions they can take in their home, school and community.

Each concept is taught and reinforced through lively scenes, songs and dances that resonate with the young students and help them understand and want to act on these important environmental issues.

The project is funded in part by a grant to the academy from Xilinx Corporation in San Jose, Calif.

In the tradition of <ahref="http://www.plymouth.edu">Plymouth State University's award winning <ahref="http://www.pllymouth.edu/etc">Educational Theatre Collaborative, TIGER offers the very best in theatre for young audiences. TIGER seeks to transform feelings, thoughts and behavior to help both children and adults envision and understand their own power in resolving the many social issues challenging students in our schools today.

Information about booking a TIGER show and/or workshop is available from TIGER tour manager <ahref="mailto:tiger-psu@plymouth.edu">Pam Irish at (603) 535-2647 or by e-mail to tiger-psu@plymouth.edu.

CONCORD - Gov. John Lynch today swore in Plymouth State University Professor Dr. Virginia Barry of Bridgewater to serve as the state's next Commissioner of Education.

The Executive Council unanimously confirmed Gov. Lynch's nomination of Dr. Barry on May 6.

"Education is the most important investment we make in the future of our state and its economy. Ginny Barry is an exceptional educational leader who has worked at every level of education - from elementary school teacher to college administrator," Gov. Lynch said in a written statement from his office. "She understands the importance of making sure we offer a high quality education to children from early childhood through college. I look forward to working closely with her as we continue to work to improve education in New Hampshire."

Barry has devoted her career to education, serving as a longtime professor and administrator at Plymouth State University. She has held numerous positions at Plymouth State including professor of advanced graduate studies, provost and vice president for academic affairs, and acting president from June 2003 to January 2004.

PSU President Sara Jayne Steen praised Barry's nomination.

"Virginia Barry will be a wonderful Commissioner. She brings to the position leadership experience across the educational levels, knowledge of the state's educational opportunities, and an energy and intelligence that will serve New Hampshire well," Steen said.

Barry has been widely recognized for her educational expertise, receiving PSU's Harold E. Hyde Award for Distinguished Educational Leadership, the College of Graduate Studies Award for Outstanding Transformational Leadership, the Distinguished Teaching Award, and the New York State Award for Support of People with Disabilities. She has excelled in teaching and scholarship that has benefited New Hampshire schools.

Barry has also provided professional development training for clinics, hospitals, and schools, and has received over $2,000,000 in grant funding from state, federal, and private foundation sources, including the Davis Foundation. She has published and presented widely on working with children with disabilities and on issues such as collaborative leadership.

Barry received her doctorate in education/human development from Florida State University in 1979. She has also done postdoctoral work at New York University, Harvard University and the College of William and Mary.

Barry is also a former elementary school teacher and principal.

About Plymouth State University
Plymouth State University is the University System of New Hampshire's regional comprehensive university that combines a heritage of teaching excellence with innovation in engaged research and community outreach. Approximately 4,300 undergraduate and 2,700 graduate students currently are enrolled at PSU, which has state-of-the-art academic and residential facilities; a classic New England village campus; four-season recreation; and historic landscapes that inspire all who study, work, and live here.

The University has taken a leadership role among the nation's most environmentally friendly institutions of higher education. In 2006 Plymouth State opened the Langdon Woods Residential Complex, the first USNH building-and one of the first and largest university residence halls in the country-to receive the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification. Langdon Woods is just one example of the University's commitment to the environment, which also encompasses a campus-wide recycling program; new courses and majors aimed at preparing graduates for careers in environmental science, stewardship, and policy; and EcoHouse, a new learning laboratory that shows students how even small-scale environmental design features can have important environmental implications.

North Country Student Teachers Get Grant Funding

PSU student teachers in New Hampshire's North Country are getting a critical financial boost from the Neil and Louise Tillotson Fund of the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation-North Country. The $42,000 grant provides stipends to student teachers in the North Country Teacher Certification program.

The stipends help students bridge the economic gap that occurs when they leave their jobs to start full-time student teaching to the time when they reenter the workforce as certified teachers.

"As a comprehensive, regional University, Plymouth State University is committed to helping students in the North Country, and we're pleased that the Foundation has recognized this important need," said PSU President Sara Jayne Steen. "We're grateful that the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation is providing significant funding for student teachers."

The North Country Teacher Certification Program, directed by PSU's Irene Mosedale, was developed as a partnership among PSU, the New Hampshire Community and Technical College - Berlin, and Granite State College. The program provides bachelor's degrees and teaching certification to place-bound students in New Hampshire's North Country region in order to address two complementary needs: replacing retiring teachers in the region and offering certification to those who can't complete traditional degree requirements because of family or work considerations.

"We are very grateful for this award," said Mosedale. "The $42,000 will help ease some of the financial burden for the North Country Teacher Certification candidates during their student teaching semester in the fall of 2007."

PSU's Lindberg Wins 06-07 Award for Excellence in Children's Theatre

Patricia L. Lindberg, professor of education and coordinator of Plymouth State University's graduate program in integrated arts, received the 2006 Award for Excellence in Children's Theatre from the New Hampshire Theatre Committee (NHTC) Feb. 2.

The NHTC is an all-volunteer board which oversees the year-round operations of the New Hampshire Theatre Awards, leading up to their annual celebration of the best community and professional theatre in the state. The award recognizes excellence in community and professional theatre.

"Trish was an easy pick," said Rick Broussard, editor of New Hampshire Magazine sponsor of the award, "Some children's theatre groups use kids creativity to give audiences a remarkable theatrical experience. Other groups focus on programs that provide a lasting value for the kids. Trish Lindberg's productions accomplish all of the above in a way that transcends the bounds of conventional children's theatre."

"Trish Lindberg reminds us that the implicit promise of all art is that it can change the world for the better. And she knows that this promise rings most true when the art comes from the hands and hearts and voices of young people."
Lindberg is co-founder and artistic director of the award-winning Educational Theatre Collaborative (ETC), a 13-year partnership between Plymouth State University, Plymouth Elementary School and Friends of the Arts. She also founded the Kearsarge Arts theatre, the largest summer arts organization of its kind in New England, offering a wide variety of arts classes for children ages 4-18 for more than 20 years in the New London area.

Working with professors Gail Mears and Gary Goodnough of PSU's M.Ed. in counselor education program, Lindberg created TIGER (Theatre Integrating Guidance, Education and Responsibility) a professional theatre company that has toured to more than113,000 school children in 398 schools. TIGER shows are created from the writings of children about difficult social issues they face in school, such as bullying, diversity, and friendship.

"TIGER enables children to hear their own voices as they step back from the experiences of bullying and intolerance of individual differences to move into more successful social interactions at school," Lindberg said.

Each January ETC produces a full-length work, with a cast comprising area children, members of the community, and students and staff of Plymouth State University. Notification of this award came just as ETC was rehearsing the 2007 production, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which was staged in Plymouth Jan. 24-28.

"Only one word really sums up the Educational Theatre Collaborative's recent production of Beauty and the Beast: amazing Allison Duhamel as Belle captivated the stage, proving she can not only act, but sing as well." --Plymouth Record-Enterprise

For the first time ETC will tour a production to Concord when it performs Beauty and the Beast at the Capitol Center for the Arts Feb. 9 at 4 and 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for the Concord performances are available at the CCA box office, at 223-1111 or online at http://www.ccanh.com/online-ticketing/87
"We are pleased to reach out to the Concord area community with an outstanding example of intergenerational theatre," Lindberg said. "We have many alumni and current students' families in the area and Concord is a city that really supports the arts. We are very excited to be performing there."

Lindberg's work has been recognized by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, which presented her the 1999 Governor's Arts and Education Award. In 2002 she won the prestigious NETC Moss Hart Trophy for Best Overall Production of 2002 for her original play, A You and Me World. In 2003 she received the Youth Theatre Director of the Year Award from the American Alliance for Theatre and Education (AATE).

She was named Plymouth State's Distinguished Teacher of 2003, and one of New Hampshire's six most remarkable women by New Hampshire Magazine. In 2004 , the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education named Lindberg New Hampshire Professor of the Year. She was selected from among nearly 400 top professors in the U.S.

"The opportunity to work with young people and the arts is an exciting and extremely fulfilling journey," Lindberg said. "I am fortunate to be part of an institution that encourages opportunities for faculty to pursue integrated creative projects. ETC, KAT and TIGER flourish because of the tremendous support from the University and members of the greater community, who have shown that they value what educational theatre an do for young people, families and society."

"My teaching has been enriched by the contact I have had with so many different people engaged in the power of the arts."

The NHTC was founded by a group of performers, directors, producers and theatre lovers who believe in the magic of the stage. The motivation was originally to give a lasting tribute to the hard work and talent that is given, often for little or no tangible reward, to bring joy and understanding to people of New Hampshire, to promote New Hampshire theatre to each other and beyond, and to raise the already high standard of theatre that exists in New Hampshire. That motivation now has become a shared vision. Dozens of groups across the state have benefited from participating, sharing notes, resources and experiences, gaining awareness of the greater theatre community and discovering their places within it.
