SMART Strategy User Account Naming Convention Draft 6/3/2002 Strategy Purpose:Provide a consistent username naming convention that is scaleable for students, faculty, and staff as well as potential visitors, parents, alums or any other role that is created based on a relationship with Plymouth using the myPlymouth portal. Strategy Authority: SMART Executive Steering Committee Background:Over the years naming conventions have varied not only over time but also from system to system. When there were relatively few users on the central systems and the Internet was in the hands of Department of Defense and a few research institutions, a simply first name, nickname, or combination of initials, could be used with little risk of confusion or duplication. With the migration to web-based systems and convergence of multiple account authentications within single sign-on portal technology, the need to identify a new standard naming convention to be used by all new users and remain with them throughout their relationship with Plymouth, regardless of what the relationship is or will be is necessary. Importantly, this naming convention must accommodate potentially hundreds of thousand users and potentially a self-created myPlymouth account option. Strategy:
