ITS in the Residence Halls
Residential Network Services (ResNet)
The residential network (ResNet) enables students to access campus resources and the Internet via a 100MB wired Ethernet connection. Each room includes one network connection per resident.
To connect personal computers to the ResNet, students will need an ethernet cable. The recommended length is a minimum of 14 feet, although longer might be helpful with some room arrangements.
PSU has established security and safe computing standards on our network. Upon initial connection ot the PSU Network, students will be guided through a process for installing network protection and antivirus tools.
Personal computers will also need to meet the following minimum standards:
- Pentium 4 PC running Windows XP SP2 / Windows Vista SP1 OR a G4 Mac running MAC OS 10.4
- An approved antivirus program must be installed an enabled
- A firewall must be installed and enabled
- Automatic updates must be configured
Residential Cable Television
Each residence hall room includes one cable television port. Students need to bring their own television and coaxial cable. To see a list of cable channels provided, visit http://www.plymouth.edu/telecom/cable_tv_channels.htm
Residential Gaming
Gamers who want to connect to networks beyond the ResNet will need to contact the Information Desk at the Learning Commons.
Residential Telephone Service
Most students come to campus with cell phones. However, land-line phones to residence hall rooms are available by request. Those phones will have a campus extension and voicemail. Emergency phones are located in central locations in the residential halls for 911 emergency calling.
Wireless Access in the Residental Halls
Wireless internet access via PSU Wireless is available in the lobby/main lounge areas of each of the Residential Halls. However in most cases, this wireless access does not extend to the individual student rooms. To ensure adequate network connectivity, students should rely on the hard-wired “blue” network jacks provided in each of the rooms. Personal wireless access points are not permitted on the PSU Residential Network as they interfere with the network protocols in each of the buildings.
